We Checked: Gold Leaf Is Not the Trend of 2026

You have seen the gilded ceiling on your feed. The gold-leafed fireplace, the brushed-gold headboard, the caption calling it the finish of the year.

We went looking for the evidence that gilding is a 2026 interiors trend. It is not there. What we found instead was three of the most-cited trend sources in the world pointing the other way — and one genuine, sourceable Irish gold story that nobody is telling.

The article everyone is quoting is three years old

The most-shared piece on gold leaf in interiors is Livingetc’s, and it is from 29 September 2023. It is also not an endorsement. Its verdict is restraint.

Kashi Shikunova of Yam Studios warns there that gold leaf “can lead to a sense of fatigue over time”. Julia Mack recommends confining gold to “smaller features such as picture frames, lighting pieces, candles, door knobs, and hinges”. The designers quoted were already pivoting to limewash and Tadelakt.

A three-year-old sceptical article is not evidence of a current trend. It is evidence that people were asking the same question in 2023 and getting the same answer.

Where gold genuinely is, right now, in Ireland

Here is the true version, and it is more useful than the false one.

That is the honest shape of it. Gold in Irish homes in 2026 is a seasonal decorative accent — a table, a mantel, six weeks of the year — not an architectural finish. Nobody is gilding a ceiling in Rathmines. Plenty of people are about to put gold on a Christmas table, because the biggest department store in the country has decided they will.

Gilding as a craft, which is a different thing entirely

None of this makes gilding uninteresting. It makes it a heritage craft rather than a trend — and heritage craft is having a genuinely documented year in Ireland, with more than 600 events and around 3,800 makers taking part in August Craft Month across the island.

Gold leaf is sold by Irish art suppliers — Evans Art Supplies in Dublin, Cork Art Supplies, artmaterials.ie among them. That is retail availability, and we have no sales data to put behind it, so we are not going to pretend it means more than it does.

What to do instead, if you want the effect

The consistent advice across every source we read, including the sceptical ones, is the same: gold works small and works reflected. Picture frames, a mirror, hardware, candlesticks, the rim of a glass. It stops working the moment it becomes a surface.

And if you want the thing gold is standing in for — warmth, depth, a room that does not look flat — the four converging 2026 trend sources all point somewhere else entirely: handmade, irregular, tactile, and preferably something you already own.
