Chanel Métiers d'art Heads to Rome

Of everything Chanel does in a year, the Métiers d'art show is the one that justifies the house's existence. It exists to display the work of the specialist ateliers Chanel has spent decades acquiring to keep alive — embroidery, feathers, millinery, goldwork, pleating, camellia-making — crafts that would otherwise have died with the last person who knew them.

The Date

Wednesday 2 December 2026, in Rome. The venue has not been announced; Chanel says the exact location “is set to be revealed at a later date”. Do not believe anyone who names one before the house does.

Why Rome

The house's own statement points at biography rather than commerce:

The couturière stayed in Rome on several occasions, deepening her love of Renaissance painting, antique art and Italian cinema.

It is also, pointedly, an Italian city — and Chanel is a French house showing its craft ateliers in the country that has spent two centuries claiming supremacy in exactly those crafts. Whether that reads as homage or as a flag being planted will depend entirely on the clothes.

Where Blazy Has Got To

This will be Matthieu Blazy's second Métiers d'art collection, capping a first full year that has been unusually well received. His ready-to-wear debut came in October 2025, his couture debut in January 2026, and his second ready-to-wear collection in March — the one with the construction cranes rising through the Grand Palais, which several critics rated the best thing shown in Paris that season.

In between, he took Cruise 2026/27 to Biarritz on 28 April 2026, staged on the site where Gabrielle Chanel opened her first couture house in 1915. A pattern is emerging: Blazy keeps returning the house to places its founder actually went, rather than to places that merely suit a campaign.

What to Watch For

Métiers d'art collections are judged on a different axis from ready-to-wear. The question is not whether the silhouette is new but whether the work is visible — whether you can see the hours in the embroidery, the feathers, the buttons. Blazy's March collection made a virtue of raw-cut hems and functional chains, an argument for construction you can see. Applied to the ateliers, that instinct could produce something genuinely worth the trip.

Rome in December, for a show that exists to prove craft still has hands attached to it. It is the last major European fashion event of the year, and on current form it is the one most likely to be remembered.
